Are you wanting to know if your eyelash color matches your hair color? Can our eyelashes be a completely different color to the hair on our head? I’m going to talk you through the science between lash color and hair color, so keep on reading to find out more…
Do Eyelashes Match Hair Color?
Our eyelashes don’t always match the color of our hair, and many people find that their lashes are actually darker than the color of their hair.
If you have light colored hair, your lashes might be surprisingly dark, to create a natural contrast that draws attention to our eyes.
Also, if you have lighter hair, your lashes might look less visible, which is wear lash tints and mascara can be helpful, for adding definition and volume to your lashes.
Your genetics play a role too, with siblings sometimes having different combinations of hair/lash colors, and while our eyebrows tend to match our hair, our eyelashes can be a totally different color to the hair on our head.
Do Our Eyelashes Change Color As We Get Older?
Yes. As part of the natural aging process, all of our hair (brows, lashes and hair) will change color as we get older.
You might notice that your lashes become lighter in color, as your body produces less melanin (the pigment responsible for color in our hair and lashes). This loss of pigment can lead to paler, or gray lashes, over time.
It doesn’t have to be our lashes getting lighter either. Sometimes, during hormonal changes, like puberty or pregnancy, you could notice your lashes darkening or becoming more pronounced.
Can You Dye Your Eyelashes?
Yes. You can use lash dye or lash tint to dye your natural lashes, just like you can tint your brows, for extra definition.
You need to use a specific eyelash dye, as it’s specifically designed to be used around the eyes, and it’ll help to tint your lashes, even your tiniest of lashes, to give a fuller lash look.
It is important to always do a patch test before using any dyes (brow tint, lash tint or hair dye), to check sensitivity issues prior to applying the dyes, as you don’t want to risk an allergic reaction.
If you’ve never used lash tint before, you could always book an appointment at your local salon, as salon experts have the skills and proper products to minimize risks, and will be able to help you choose the perfect color for a natural shade match.
When you use lash tint, it will give you more defined lashes, and you could even skip mascara, as the tint will make your lashes look a lot more noticeable, and your lash line a little thicker, as it’ll tint all of your tiny lashes too.
The results will last several weeks, and here are some helpful tips for dyeing your lashes:
- Always perform a patch test
- Choose a shade that complements your hair color
- Opt for professional application whenever possible
- Refresh the color every few weeks for best results
