Choosing the Right Hair Oil for Your Hair Type

We all have a different hair type, and our hair type affects how different hair oils work.

If your hair is thick, dry or curly, coconut oil is an effective nourishing hair oil, and it’ll help to deeply condition while also restoring moisture.

If you have fine hair (like myself), almond oil works well, offering lighter nourishment without weighing our hair down, and I personally really recommend MoroccanOil, as it works wonders on my fine hair, and they even do a lighter formula of the oil, which is perfect for fine hair.

Always consider your hair’s texture when choosing your perfect oil. If you have hair that’s prone to frizz, sesame oil can help smooth and tame it, while lighter oils like jojoba are perfect for oily scalps.

Start by warming your chosen hair oil between your palms, always starting with a small amount and building it up. When you warm up the oil, it helps to maximize the penetration, especially if you have thick or coarse hair.

Section your hair so you can apply hair oil evenly from your scalp to your ends, although, if you have an oily scalp, you can do from your ears down to the ends, so you don’t make your scalp even oilier.

Use a wide-tooth comb to spread the oil evenly throughout your hair, and if you want a more intensive hydration boost, you can always leave the oil on your hair for upto an hour before rinsing, or even overnight with a hair bonnet to protect your bed linen.

How Much Hair Oil is Too Much?

It will depend on how long your hair is. If you have short hair, start with 1-2 drops, and longer hair can start with 3-4 drops.

You don’t want to overload your hair, as it’ll make your hair greasy and weighed down, and will be difficult to wash out.

Always start with a small amount and distribute it evenly, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

You can always add more drops of oil, but if you start with too much, you’ll just have to wash your hair.

Things To Avoid When Using Hair Oils In Your Haircare Routine

To avoid any negative side effects from using hair oil, you want to be careful when applying heavy oils to hair that’s already oily. It’ll just leave your hair limp and lank, so go sparingly.

I love using hair oil in my hair overnight, but if you have a sensitive scalp, this could potentially clog your scalp’s pores, or cause irritation, so you can always do a patch test to see how your hair and scalp reacts to your hair oil.

Never overuse hair oil, as you don’t want to be stripping your hair’s natural moisture, as that could then end up causing dryness, damage or dullness over time.
